1st Pascagoula High Student to Join All-American Band

Friday, the first ever Pascagoula High School band member was selected for the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.

David Thomas plays the sousaphone in the Pascagoula High School marching band, but there’s one thing that separates him from the rest of his band mates: David is completely deaf in his left ear and 45% deaf in the right ear. Thomas says, “It doesn’t really affect my play ability. It’s just an annoyance whenever your director has to call you constantly and you just turn about, ‘Huh?’ It’s more of an annoyance than a disability, but apparently to other people it’s a disability.”

Medical books may call it a disability, but Thomas has proved he is not disabled. Friday, he received an esteemed invitation to join the 2015 U.S. All-American Bowl Marching Band. Thomas also says, “This is a huge honor and if anything, it’s a reflection of those who’ve helped me get to this point. So, I’m very honored to have such quality people around me to inspire me to get to this point, so it’s been a blessing.”

One of the things that makes this invitation so special is that out of the millions of band members across the U.S., only 125 students are selected. Thomas also says, “It definitely feels special because it’s definitely a selective group and it’s an honor. I’m just glad I had it in me to work to this point.”

To Thomas, it means something more. He’s always been interested in the Armed Forces, but because of his disability, he is not eligible to join. Performing in the Army All-American Marching Band will allow him to be, for a moment, part of an organization he admires deeply. Thomas closes, “It’s about learning to find yourself in the correct moment and just snag it. If anything, I’m just looking forward to marching on that field because that’s what I love doing. I love marching band.”

Thomas is the first student from Pascagoula High School to be selected for the All-American Marching Band, hopefully paving the way for future students for many years to come. Thomas will march at halftime at the 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl on January 3rd, 2015.
