18th Annual Billfish Classic Began Today

Big boats, big fish and big bucks: the 18th annual Billfish Classic is well underway.
Tonight, folks waited at Point Cadet Marina for the boats to bring in the big catches of the day. While they waited, they were entertained by live music and family fun activities. 61 boats entered the classic and are competing for a total of $1.2 million. Billfish Classic director Bobby Carter expects the fishermen who catch the heaviest marlin to take home the grand prize: “We have four boats with marlin on them. They will be coming in tomorrow. We have a lot of tuna, dolphin, wahoo that were caught. Right now, we are probably around 25/26 billfish that have been caught and released. So, the fishing is phenomenal out there. The guys are having a great time.”
Several state fish records have been broken during past classics, including the largest blue marling at over 1,000 pounds and an 800 pound blue fin tuna.
