1108th Aviation Group sendoff ceremony

Mississippi National Guardsmen highly trained in aircraft maintenance and repair are taking their skills to the Middle East in support of our military overseas.
Today, the 1108th Aviation Group held a sendoff ceremony at First Baptist Church Biloxi. Approximately 80 soldiers from the Gulfport based unit will deploy to Kuwait next month as part of a task force. Their mission will be to perform specialized aircraft maintenance in support of aviation brigades. Here at home, the 1108th repairs military helicopters across nine southeast states and two United States territories.
Commander Col. Glen Flowers says that extensive experience will be invaluable during the nine month deployment to Kuwait. “Our team performs this work on a day-to-day basis so when they deploy overseas, we bring as we call them the skilled artisans to bear and bring them to the fight. We take that skill set and project it to support the deployed Army Aviation formations down range.”
Officials say once in Kuwait, the soldiers will be doing sheet metal repairs, avionics troubleshooting, and operating a machine shop that can fabricate different tools and aircraft components.
