Zoning change request denied in Gautier

Tonight, the Gautier Planning Commission met to discuss and vote on a zoning change request from a developer for two parcels of land.

This developer wanted to construct 332 homes on a plot of 80 plus acres on the south side of Old Spanish Trial. The current R1 zoning allows for the width to be 80 feet and they wanted to move that down to 60.

Many residents in the area came out to voice their opposition. Their issues included property value reduction, plot being wetlands so causing drainage to their land, school zoning for that many homes, traffic it would cause, and more.

Ultimately the planning commission decided to deny their request for a zone change, but residents say this is only the beginning. Gautier resident Dale Boudreaux said, “It’s still going to be an environmental impact, but the area is zoned residential and if they follow the residential guidelines there is not much I can do about that.”

Gautier resident Tommy Krumland said, “My property is almost right next to the proposed location and so inevitably if they were to get that I feel it would negatively affect my property value so you know there is some concern there.”

Gautier resident Yvonne Rumery said, “We moved out of a subdivision to have the serenity and the quietness of where we are at. It’s not needed.”

Residents hope those in the area will stay informed as the development continues.

The Gautier Planning Commission will meet on April 16th to decide if this decision will be overturned.
