Young Mental Health First Aid Training

As students on the Gulf Coast gear up for the upcoming school year, it is important to understand what a child may go through on a regular basis on campus.

This is why the Mississippi Department of Mental Health hosted a ‘Young Mental Health First Aid Training’ in Gulfport.

The training allows educators, first responders, parents, and caregivers the opportunity to increase awareness of adolescent mental health.

As educators typically spend eight hours a day with students during the school year, it is important for them to acknowledge the symptoms and seek help accordingly. Mental Health Awareness Training Program Coordinator Courtney Littleton said, “Most disorders develop during adolescence times so when a teacher is able to recognize their signs and symptoms, something is going on. It may not be a mental, but it may be something and being able to feel comfortable enough and have the tools to be able to reach out is really important for our young people.”
