WXXV stops by Mert’s Satsumas in Gulfport
The Orange Grove community in Gulfport is aptly named because it once boasted multiple orange farms. One farm in the area still carrying on the tradition.
WXXV News 25’s Everett Ganier Jr. headed to Mert’s Satsumas earlier today. The farm is family owned and operated by Glenn and Valeria Merritt.
Mert’s Satsuma’s invites families to pick their own fruit and explore the farm. Glenn Merritt said, “We do a U-Pik during certain parts of the year. It’s not open during all times. Sometimes we have grape fruits, oranges, and kumquats. Not every year because of the cold damage we sustain during the year.”
Valeria Merritt said, “Satsumas are easy to peel and they are easy for kids and older people. We do tours, we’re members of the agritourism seat in Mississippi so we do tours all year round. Mostly during the fruit season.”
Mert’s Satsumas first opened in 1999 and is thriving with over 600 citrus trees.
