WWII veteran recognized in Gautier for his life accomplishments
The Gautier American Legion held a ceremony Sunday to honor the achievements of a military hero.
World War II veteran Ira Edwin Allison was recognized for his past heroisms and accomplishments. Allison served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 as boatsman second class.
He was stationed in Plymouth, England and ran in the first wave of soldiers during the D-Day Invasion of Normandy in 1944.
Allison was given multiple awards during the ceremony including a key to the city, a flag from the tomb of the unknown soldier, and a high school diploma he was never able to achieve. Department of Mississippi Southern Area Commander Bill Whatley said, “We love all of our veterans. We honor them all for their service and we know a lot of veterans today and our military are going through a hard time. We ask that you pray for them and we ask you to honor them like we’ve just honored this man today. We’re glad we’re able to do that. I wish I could do it for every World War II veteran.”
The City of Sumrall, Mississippi also honored Allison by declaring August 22nd as ‘Ira Allison Day’ in the city.
