World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day takes place annually on November 14th and aims to promote a global effort to tackle the growing threat of the disease.
About one in eight of Mississippi’s adult population is diagnosed with diabetes. World Diabetes Day is a time to encourage people who see risk factors to get tested or screened for diabetes. Some risk factors include obesity, ethnic background, and family history.
Local Nurse Practitioner K.C. Arnold tells News 25 today is also a time to celebrate the major strides in treatment for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. “In the spring of 2017, we’re going to have our first device. It is going to be called a Medtronic 670g. They’re going to be able to have a device that measures the blood sugar, reads it to the pump and the two things are going to take care of the blood sugars. It’s called a hybrid-closed loop.”
World Diabetes Day is celebrated on November 14th because it coincides with Frederick Banting’s birthday, the man who helped conceive the idea that led to the discovery of insulin.
