Middle school students making cards for first responders

Eighth graders in the North Woolmarket Middle and Elementary School art class designed ‘thank you’ cards for first responders.

The cards will be given out to first responders across the Coast on Friday in light of 9/11. Their art teacher saw this project as an opportunity to teach students about how valuable and dangerous are first responders’ jobs are.

On 9/11, nearly 3,000 Americans were killed, including more than 400 emergency personnel.

For those students this project was a very eye-opening project and they hope their cards can show our local first responders that they’re appreciated. Eighth grader Abigail Martino said, “I hope it makes them happy and that they enjoy them because we thank them for all that they do. They do a whole lot for us and we need to repay them in some way.”

Eighth grader Devin Hernandez said, “It does make me feel pretty special that I’m helping them out. Maybe it will help them with their mental health, something like that. On the card I drew it was a heart with the fingers like that, I just wanna spread love.”

Eighth grader Kayley Thompson said, “I put a bald eagle because it just reminds me of protection.”

The cards will be given out to first responders on Friday by the Gulf Coast Hub for Volunteers and Nonprofits. They’re also cooking lunch for police and firemen across the Coast.
