Woman shot and killed during hostage situation in Richland, MS

A woman was shot and killed during a hostage situation Wednesday evening at a Walmart store in Richland, Mississippi.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety identified the woman killed as 21-year-old Corlunda McGinister of West Helena, Arkansas.

Witnesses say McGinister got into a confrontation with an employee in the customer service department, pulled a gun on her, and began holding her hostage.

Richland police entered the store to try to defuse the situation and McGinister was ultimately shot and killed by police. Richland Police Chief Nick McLendon said, “It’s devastating for all parties involved – the officers, everybody that was involved in this situation. You know, you know, with the Christmas season coming around, mental health is a big deal because of the stress involved and the Christmas season, so it’s very devastating at Christmas time.”

Shopper James Field said, “It’s horrible. I mean, uh, somebody lost a loved one here at Christmas.”

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation says no one else was injured.
