Woman allegedly beaten to death with a hammer; son arrested

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A man accused of beating his mother to death with a hammer has been arrested.

Sam Brown, a spokesperson for the Jackson Police Department, said it happened Wednesday at a home in Mississippi’s capital city.

Police said Dekarius Funches, 21, is accused of killing his mother, Latasha Funches, 42, news outlets reported. A motive has not been released.

The victim’s daughter found her body after she got a call to check on her, Jackson Police Deputy Chief Derick Hearn said.

Brown said Funches fled after the attack and was captured in Carroll County following a high-speed chase. He faces charges of murder and auto theft, authorities said. It was unknown if he has an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

This is the 67th homicide reported in Jackson so far this year.
