Willie Joe Garry Jr. and Brendan Hardy both turning pro

Pascagoula’s Willie Joe Garry Jr. and Harrison Central’s Brendan Hardy were the only two Coast products drafted right out of high school in the 2018 MLB first year player draft.

Those turned out to be picks well spent as both of them have decided to make it official with their respective organizations.

Yesterday, News 25 was the first to report that Hardy, a 31st round selection of the New York Mets, would be signing his contract today.

The Sun Herald later broke that Garry Jr., a 9th round pick of the Minnesota Twins, is opting to turn pro as well.

Separate decisions, yes, but these two long-time friends and 6A rivals have been in close contact ever since the draft, talking about how it’s all coming full circle. “He’s like my brother. We’ve always gotten along, just playing against each other which is hard to do. But I mean that rivalry always kept us close knit, and the fact that I got to see him get drafted, and then when I get drafted, like it’s just a blessing,” said Hardy.

Meanwhile, Garry Jr. tells News 25 “we both understand this isn’t just about us, but about the whole Gulf Coast and putting everyone down here on the draft radar.”
