Wiggins to Begin Selling Alcohol on Sundays
Starting this weekend, Wiggins convenience stores and restaurants can sell beer and light wine on Sundays from noon until 11 p.m.
The city of Wiggins is the only city in Stone County that sells alcohol, but they are now taking their sales a step further and allowing beer and light wine to be sold on Sundays. Cabin Store employee Lisa Page said, “People stop by here all the time and we’re having to turn people away and they’re going across county lines and giving money that we can use in our community, they’re giving it away to others.”
A few small business owners pitched the idea to the mayor and Board of Aldermen back in June saying the limited sales have been limiting business.
Joel Miles, mayor of Wiggins, said, “There was opposition but it was peaceful and calm and done exactly the way it should’ve been done and you appreciate folks speaking and talking about their values and so forth like that, but as a city, I think it was apparently time for this to take place.”
The mayor believes this is great for business. “Increased sales tax revenue. We have a lot of outsiders come in the city and our locals are going to Harrison and Forrest Counties to buy on Sundays, so they just felt it was time that we needed to keep that revenue at home.”
Lisa Page said, “It’s just overall going to make people very, very excited and happy and our customers who come through the doors, it’s just one more thing to be happy about when they come get their ribs or burgers or stuff on weekend and Sundays. They can grab their beer, too.”
