Widespread damage left behind in George County after morning storms
Lucedale residents are now cleaning up the damage left behind by early morning storms.
Roofs on the ground, trees on the road, and power lines down: that is the scene in Lucedale.
Storms left behind widespread damage throughout George County, but officials say the hardest hit area is the Rocky Creek Community.
There are several reports of home and mobile home damage in the area.
Safety officials are asking members of the community to stay home and off the roads while crews are cleaning everything up.
Some members of the community are now coming together to clear the roads and pick up the pieces. District One Supervisor Frankie Massey said, “It’s one of those things and we’ll just deal with it and go on, that’s what we do. We’ll make it. I’m just so appreciative that there appears to be no injuries so far. Everyone says the Lord spared everyone and we’ll just move on. That’s what we’re supposed to do.”
Mississippi Power crews are working hard to get the lights back on. This morning there were 2,000 Mississippi Power customers with power out. As of this afternoon the number was less than 100.
There are many wires down and a few broken poles that Mississippi Power will be fixing, but they need to remove the trees first which officials say takes a lot of time.
Mississippi Power is asking their customers to be patient as they work while following COVID-19 protocol.
