Wicker Weighs in on Secretary of State Pick
Donald Trump has named Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson as his choice for secretary of state early this morning.
The 64-year-old Tillerson is a longtime oil executive with no government or diplomatic experience. Those in favor of the pick call Tillerson a dealmaker with business ties to several world leaders. The pick could prove controversial because of the executive’s ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Senator Roger Wicker weighed in saying a president is entitled to their nominee picks, but he will weigh the pros and cons before deciding on a vote that would fit on behalf of the Mississippi people. “I know that’s he been a very successful president of Exxon Mobil and a lot of people that have talked to me are very complimentary of him, but that said, I think generally speaking if a person is qualified, the president is entitled to put them on his team. I would tend to have a presumption toward confirmation.”
Also, Senator Wicker says he is very positive about Governor Rick Perry’s candidacy for secretary of energy.
