Who Killed Mark Burgess?
It dates back to 1991, a man killed in cold blood on his way home in Pascagoula. Fast forward to 2016, the murder remains a mystery with no arrest made in the murder of Mark Burgess. News 25’s Shelby Myers has the story.
“I got it in ’92 after Mark died and it’s in memory of Mark S. Burgess. I said I’ll never have the flames colored or the wooden cross finished unless they find out who killed Mark. The tattoo is open, just like his case.” Friends of Mark Burgess wouldn’t go on camera, but they have no problem gushing over the companion they miss dearly.
It was May of 1991, Mark Burgess was 26-years-old. He had spent the night out on the town and ended up arguing with his friends at the bar and decided to walk home, a decision that would alter his life forever. As he was walking down Industrial Road, Burgess was struck in the head and killed instantly. “They first thought he was hit by a car and it just going to be hit and run. Ultimately, he was struck in the head with an object, probably by a passing car,” said. Lt. Darren Versiga with the Pascagoula Police Department. That object, officials say, was heavy and metal.
Lt. Versgia tells News 25 this is a case near to his heart because he and Burgess were high school friends. “Mark was really a good guy. He had his faults, but who don’t. I would love to see it solved.”
Mark Burgess was no perfect man. He liked to fight and he liked to drink, that’s what friends and authorities will tell you, but he wasn’t a man who seemed to have many enemies. So, the question remains: why would someone drive by, hit him in the head and leave him for dead? “No one has really come through with concrete evidence that we could use to prosecute someone and that’s really what we need,” said Lt. Versiga.
Lt. Versiga tells News 25 he’s reopening this investigation this week to try and breathe some life back into the case and find justice for his friend.
