White Avenue gate closed for Spring Break
With multiple police departments implementing traffic plans to accommodate Spring Breakers this weekend, Keesler Air Force Base is also steering traffic away from the anticipated congestion on Highway 90.
The main entrance to the base at White Avenue was closed yesterday evening and will not reopen until 5 a.m. Monday morning. Visitors Center operations are now taking place at the Meadows Road Gate, which will be open 24/7 until 5:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.
The gate on Pass Road will maintain normal hours of operation. 81st Security Forces Squadron Commander Major Jonathan Murray said, “We coordinated with the Biloxi Police Department with the impact of the traffic congestion expected during Spring Break in the local area and one of the concerns was alleviating some of the traffic flow on White Avenue. Typically the Meadow Gate is closed on weekends, but since we’ve closed the gate on White Avenue. We’re opening the Meadows Gate for 24 hours a day through the weekend then Monday we’ll resume normal back to normal operations where White Avenue gate will open up again.”
The City of Biloxi and Keesler Air Force Base are currently preparing to begin construction work on their new Division Street gate which could provide an additional route during future traffic altering events.
