What the Hurricane Katrina Memorial represents
The Hurricane Katrina Memorial in Biloxi has been standing since February 2006.
The memorial was built by 130 employees and subcontractors of ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.” It dons the name of those who died and are missing on a wall the size of the tidal surger that hit the Gulf Coast.
The mosaic was done by the same artist as the Camille Memorial and the glass box holds items found washed up.
Vincent Creel was working for the City of Biloxi when Katrina hit. He witnessed the city be washed away and everyone begin to pick up the pieces and that is what the memorial represents to him. “The real story that people should get out of Katrina is that whatever we go through, it’s something that we can always overcome. We owe it to our grandparents and their grandparents who have gone through so many storms that we can do the same things. And that is the lesson you give to the next generations. That whatever calamity might befall our community, that we will always be able to get through it.”
