West Harrison rallies around scholars as they celebrate No. 1 state ranking

They’ve known about the honor for a while now, but today, students and staff at West Harrison High School celebrated being ranked the No. 1 high school in the state.

West Harrison’s top state ranking was based on the Mississippi Department of Education’s Accountability Grades for the 2021-22 school year.

During the pep rally celebration, students who received a perfect score on state tests in Biology I, Algebra I, English II and U.S. History were recognized.

State Rep. Jay McKnight honored West Harrison during the celebration, along with Dr. Marla Davis, associate superintendent and academic liasion with the Mississippi Department of Education Office of Academic Education.

“We wanted to have a pep rally — not just a banquet-type situation for them. We wanted to celebrate these scholars just like we do the athletes,” said West Harrison Principal Dr. Michael Weaver. The reason that they come to school is to learn, get educated and it’s just incredible.”

West Harrison was ranked third in the state going in to this latest testing assessment.
