West Harrison High Band Headed to Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade
This morning, tears of joy flooded the West Harrison High School band room as representatives from Macy’s announced their selection to march in the 2017 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Students walked in completely oblivious to the huge news. Once they heard they are headed to the Big Apple to march for millions, shrieks, tears and claps erupted in the music room.
Macy’s officials tell News 25 the school’s band is one of ten in the country selected to perform and out of 175 applicants, the kids had a certain energy they could not ignore. Creative Director for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Wesley Whatley said, “They were telling a story that was compelling and really relatable to an audience and it was super entertaining. At the end of the day, on Thanksgiving morning we want to entertain our New York crowd and our national audience. We know West Harrison will be able to do that for us.”
Shelby Dessommes and Bailey Allgood are both on the West Harrison color guard. “I want to tell my kids this. I want to tell my parents this. I want to tell my family this. This will go down in history and I’m so happy,” said Allgood. Dessommes said, “It will be incredible to inspire the people in Mississippi and everyone watching because it will give them hope and they’ll know they have that opportunity as well”
The 200 students have 18 months to prepare for the big day. The parade will be televised on WXXV NBC.
