West Harrison alum and WNBA draft pick hosts basketball camp for hometown kids

WNBA draft pick Ameshya Williams-Holliday is giving back to her hometown of Gulfport in a big way!

The West Harrison alum, who was drafted out of Jackson State in May by the Indiana Fever, is the first draft pick from a historically black college and university since 2002.

Even though Williams-Holliday has accomplished so much over the years, she wanted to take time out of her busy schedule to help the younger generation be the best they can by starting her own basketball camp.

With the help from her former basketball friends and family, the inaugural camp was open to boys in grades three through 12 and girls at North Gulfport Elementary and Middle School.

The 130 kids that registered for the camp got a free t-shirt and autographed picture. Williams-Holliday said, “I’m just glad I inspire a lot of kids, a lot of kids write me on Instagram. I text them back. I don’t leave them on read or nothing. Their parents text me ‘can you come to my daughter’s game’ and all that. I go to games and stuff. So, I want to give back to them myself. I want to coach them and show them how to do it. You can be me one day, you can do this. You can go further then I went. You can keep doing this.”

Williams-Holiday says she would like to continue the basketball camps in the future.
