West Elementary School in Gulfport hosting ‘Knock Our Socks Off’ sock drive

Starting today, West Elementary and Gulfport First United Methodist Church are partnering together for a sock drive to help those in need.

With temperatures dropping and the holiday season approaching, students and teachers at the school have been asked to donate one dollar or a pair of socks for the clothes closet.

The class with the most donations K through 2nd and 3rd through 5th grade will celebrate with a donut party. Along with socks, undergarments are also being collected.

Fourth graders Ahlani Newell and Raniya Magee were the first two students to donate towards the sock drive. They tell News 25 they love giving back. Ahlani said, “I was at church and there was a person outside the church that was asking for money. I felt bad so I gave him some money and since then I loved helping people.”

Raniya Magee said, “I just wanted to help them because I have all these things they don’t and I feel kind of guilty so that’s why I’m trying to help them try to be like me.”

Those interested in donating a dollar, socks, or undergarments can drop them off at the school’s front office or go to Gulfport First United Methodist Church.

The sock drive will run up until Friday, November 26th.
