Weekend Woods Fires Burn Over 700 Acres
Fire officials are urging residents to hold off on burning trash, leaves or anything else until weather conditions improve and the winds die down.
Harrison County Fire Marshal Pat Sullivan tells News 25 firefighters from Harrison, Stone and Pearl River counties battled and contained at least six different woods fire, spreading over more than 700 acres, in those counties this weekend. With the dry, windy conditions and low humidity, the threat of more fires starting isn’t over yet.
“We don’t recommend burning right now. Let the winds die down. When you do burn, to have the precautions of not leaving the fire, have a water source to put the fire out, having tools to clear around the area and those kind of things,” said Sullivan.
The Mississippi Forestry Commission continues to monitor for fires and they are providing alerts for when conditions are dangerous.
