Wednesday afternoon wildfire in Jackson County contained

JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- Jackson County fire crews battled a wildfire that was approaching homes in the Latimer community Wednesday afternoon in the area of Pine Avenue and Shady Pine Drive.

Fire crews spent much of the afternoon and evening providing structural protection to five homes in the area to prevent the fire from spreading.

Mississippi Forestry and Sandhill Crane Wildlife Refuge crews were also on scene, bulldozing containment lines.

The wildfire spanned seven acres, but is now 100 percent contained.

It is unclear at this time what caused the fire, but Mississippi Forestry says due to dry conditions, Jackson County residents should refrain from burning anything to avoid situations like these.
