Ways to avoid contractor scams as hurricane season begins

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch and the Mississippi State Board of Contractors are warning against contractor scams this hurricane season.

After a storm, individuals can pose as licensed contractors as a way to prey on vulnerable citizens. Here are a few ways you can avoid being scammed:

  • Be wary of door-to-door repair operations or people who demand deposits or payment in cash
  • Ask for proof that the contractor is licensed
  • Require a written contract that details the work to be done and materials to be used
  • Do not make a large deposit or upfront payment in full

You can search for licensed contractors and more about contractor scams at www.msboc.us.
