A Wave of History at Bicentennial Flag Exhibit
Celebrating Mississippi’s bicentennial is just one year long party.
A group of ninth graders from Resurrection High School were taking their shoes off to get a hands-on experience with our state history in Pascagoula today. The first U.S. flag ever to include Mississippi and the state’s original constitution were on display at the Pascagoula Library.
The manager at the library says the 20 star flag is very symbolic to our state officially joining the union in 1817. She says it was found in Maine and was initially owned by a boat captain. Amanda Brooks with the Pascagoula Public Library said, “They believe that it actually flew on a ship at one point. These flags are very rare because they only flew over the United States for one year.”
Sarah Torgeson with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History said, “ This is an important part of our statehood history. It’s an important part of history as Mississippians. So it’s really wonderful to be able to bring it around the state and let people from all over be able to see it.”
If you missed out on seeing the exhibit, the state’s department of archives and history will bring it to Gulfport in March.
