Walking for healthy hearts in Long Beach

Even though Valentine’s Day has passed, February is still all about hearts.
In observance of National American Heart Month, a group of forty people were keeping their hearts healthy by participating in a one mile heart walk in Long Beach this afternoon.
University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus held the walk. It was a chance for students, educators, and university officials to get up and get some blood pumping.
The organizer tells News 25 the walk ended up moving people in more ways than one. Fitness Center Assistant Director and Grant Coordinator Kimberly Beard said, “Walking is a stress reliever and also provides great benefits and also the camaraderie of spending time together with friends and colleagues. We’re all busy throughout the day so just a chance to relax and enjoy a nice stroll around campus and get together. I heard some people even talking about starting some workouts together as friends at the fitness center. I think it served a lot of purposes.”
Walkers celebrated afterwards with a healthy lunch.
