Walker Powell named C-USA Pitcher of the Week

Some high praise for Southern Miss Pitcher Walker Powell who is the latest recipient of the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week.

On Saturday, the senior right-hander threw a complete game shutout against McNeese State in a 10-0 eight inning run rule.

Powell gave up just six hits and walked no one while striking out six across 110 pitches. That was the fifth complete game and second shutout of his USM career, lowering his season ERA to a miniscule 0.82 over three starts.

Also Powell’s fourth weekly honor from C-USA.

And a pretty good weekend all around for Southern Miss, going 3-1 at the Lake Area Classic with two wins over Valparaiso and that win over McNeese State followed by a loss to the Cowboys.

Also an impressive showing for Ole Miss at the Keith LeClair Classic with wins over High Point, East Carolina, and Indiana.

Mississippi State with its first losing weekend of the year, dropping two out of three at Long Beach State.
