Voting Reminders before Election Day

Next Tuesday, we’ll have a new president of the United States.
News 25’s Kendra Turley caught up with Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann as he stopped in Gulfport today to remind voters of the following before hitting the polls on November 8th.
After months of attacks, scandals, and debates, the 2016 presidential election is nearing an end. In less than a week, millions of people will head to the polls to cast their vote for the new president of the United States. Gulfport resident Rhonda Cook said, “Can’t wait until November 8th. It’s been a very long and brutal election season.”
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann stopped in Gulfport to remind voters of do’s and don’ts on Election Day. Before heading to the polls, it’s important to remember to bring your voter I.D. While casting your vote, avoid taking any pictures and keep in mind, write in ballots will not be accepted. “When you cast your ballot, you are to leave the polling place. You are not to sit around. We don’t want anyone within 30 feet of the polling place,” said Hosemann.
He addressed voter concerns as well, such as possible cyber hacks from Russia. “When you cast your ballot, it’s saved on a card only at that location. At the end of the day, the cards are downloaded at the location and then they’re brought to the county courthouse. They never touch the internet until the results are posted to us.”
With Election Day just days away, many people here in South Mississippi are still undecided about whether or not they’ll vote. Gulfport resident Brittney Ryan said, “I don’t like either one of the candidates. If there’s a lesser of two evils, I can’t find it yet.”
Hosemann urges those who are on the fence to head to the polls when the time comes because voting isn’t just a right, it’s an obligation. “There are men and women, all volunteers, that are in foxholes in Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, the morning you cast your ballot. They’re there so you can cast your ballot in a free and fair election.”
