Volunteers needed for Harrison County Advocacy Center’s ‘Friends of Court’ program

Harrison County’s Advocacy Center is calling on more volunteers to assist in its ‘Friends of Court’ program.

Friends of Court is a community-based program utilizing volunteers to assist all courts in monitoring vulnerable adults, supporting veterans, and protecting children.

Volunteers work with chancery court judges on custody, guardianship, and vulnerable adult cases.

The program currently has about two dozen volunteers, but would like to double this number due to multiple cases stacked onto volunteers.

Training sessions for volunteers are combined into 12-hour sessions spaced out over three days, starting from August 15th through the 17th.

Harrison County Advocacy Program Liaison Jeannie Herrin is encouraging those who are interested in helping be a voice for those in need. “Well, I think that it’s our responsibility to help the most vulnerable in our community. And I always say that, you know, “service before self” we all sometimes get so wrapped up in our own lives that we don’t see that there are lots of people out there that need someone to stand up for them.”

To be a volunteer you must be at least 21-years-old, in possession of a vehicle, and fulfill the 12 additional training hours.

For more information on how to apply call Jeannie Herrin’s office at 228-241-1837.
