Visions of Sugarplums Shopping Spree
Visions of sugarplums danced through the aisles of Wal-Mart this afternoon, 24 of them to be exact, for a $300 shopping spree. The lucky Pascagoula students were selected by their teachers and community leaders. They used their money wisely for giving and receiving.
Dashing down the aisles and loading up like Santa would his sleigh with smiles stretching from ear to ear like reindeer across the sky on Christmas Eve, the holiday of giving has arrived early for these 24 Pascagoula kids. Nine-year-old Makayla Harris said, “I got myself an Easy Bake Oven and a singing Olaf and some Hersey headphones.”
Some had their lists and even checked them twice, while others took a little more time to decide how to spend their $300. This was all a sweet surprise from the Visions of Sugarplums program which was started seven years ago to make sure no child is overlooked on Christmas. Visions of Sugarplums Creator Steve Jordan said, “I just had a big bear hug from one, I assume she was part of the group because she came up and hugged me. They’re very grateful for this opportunity.”
One of the requirements for the kids participating in this shopping spree is they have to buy gifts for their families. One of them is buying a necklace for his mom and a watch for his dad.
Eight-year-old Coddell Hall Jr. said, “I’m so excited to be here, for my teachers, my friends, and my family and my teachers. So, thank you very much.”
The children are chosen by their teachers each year. Program coordinators hope this experience gives the kids a hands on lesson in love and also what it means to give and receive. “If it wasn’t for my mom, I wouldn’t even be here right now. So, I’m really thankful that I’m able to be here right now to stand up and get the toys,” said Harris.
