Veterans Memorial at the D’Iberville Town Green
The City of D’Iberville honored local veterans with the debut of a new memorial. News 25’s Kendra Turley takes us to Town Green for a look at today’s groundbreaking ceremony.
The anniversary of Pearl Harbor is often a time of observance and reflection. The City of D’Iberville used the day as a chance to show appreciation for local veterans. Local veteran Carl Tippitt said, “A lot of people don’t realize what the veterans gave. In fact, many of them gave their life, you know?”
City officials held a groundbreaking ceremony to debut a veterans memorial in Town Green. With granite moments, plaques, park benches and more on the way, the area will serve as a place of remembrance for many. VFW Auxiliary President James Besse said, “We now have a wall. This is just a start. We have a lot more to do here, but this is just the beginning.”
Right now, the bricks along the wall are blank, but once the memorial is complete they’ll be filled with names of people in the area who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Jerry Kaminski served in the Air Force for 26 years. When the time comes, he plans to buy a brick for his wife who served in the Air Force as well. “I think that’s why people come to memorials like this, veterans memorials. To reminisce and reflect upon the loved ones and the reason we have our freedoms today.”
There will be a formal dedication once the entire veteran’s memorial is complete. City officials expect to finish the project within the next couple of months. D’Iberville City Planner Jeff Taylor said, “It’s going to be added to as more young people from the D’Iberville area are called to duty and they are honored. We would want to have a place for them to be honored here.”
