Verdict Reached on Danielle Dewitt Trial

A Hancock County jury has determined the fate of the basketball coach accused of sexually touching a student.
After several hours of deliberation, the jury found Danielle Dewitt guilty on two counts of touching a minor for lustful purposes, but not guilty on two counts of sexual battery.
Judge Lawrence Bourgeois sentenced her to the maximum for these charges which is 15 years each, for a total of 30 years.
The courtroom was packed as the attorneys began their closing arguments. District Attorney Chris Daniel began by reminding the jury of the testimonies they’ve heard over the past several days including the victim and the defendant.
Dewitt’s attorney, Jim Davis, told the jury the biggest hole in this case was no direct evidence that sexual intercourse happened.
News 25 was able to catch up with both attorneys after court adjourned. District Attorney for Hancock County Chris Daniel said, “We’re so pleased that the victim received a verdict in her favor, a verdict of guilty. She’s been so strong throughout this process and we’re very happy for her.”
“Of course, Ms. Dewitt would go through the appeal process and this, in a roundabout way, is only round one. We would go into the appeal process and see where we end up there,” said Davis.
Before issuing the sentence, Judge Bourgeois said, “The most precious asset that our community has is the children.” He went on to tell Dewitt: “you manipulated that child and took advantage of the trust given to you and showed no remorse whatsoever.”
Attorney Jim Davis said they plan to appeal those charges.
