Vehicle burglary spike in Waveland

The Waveland Police Department is investigating a spike in vehicle burglaries in the city.
Officials say these are crimes of opportunity, each vehicle was left unlocked. Police officers urge citizens to lock their cars as well as hide any personal items out of sight.
The department has seen ten vehicle burglaries in the past week. Officials say there is typically an increase during the summer, but these crimes are easily avoidable. Sergeant Erik Castro with Waveland PD said, “The main thing I can’t stress enough is you gotta lock those vehicles. That’s what’s going to keep you from becoming a victim. We teach our kids. We teach everybody, don’t be an easy target, walk in groups, it’s the same thing with your vehicle, don’t be an easy target. You have to secure it that’s the first step and that’s your best chance to prevent this from happening.”
You can report any suspicious activity to the Waveland Police Department at 228-255-9191 or call Crime Stoppers to leave anonymous tips.
