Vas Madness
A new study shows this time of year men tend to schedule their vasectomies during March Madness to stay home and enjoy the college basketball tournament.
News 25’s Jaylon Morris got in touch with a local urologist to check in on what is known as ‘vas madness.’
Start scheduling time to fill out those brackets, or in this case, schedule a doctor’s appointment. Gulfport Urologist Joseph Cottone is dishing out assists to men with a game plan to sit back, relax, and enjoy the college basketball tournament. “Absolutely it’s a smart move. It gives you an excuse to hang out without having the wife nagging you.”
Researchers from the Athena Health Network found a 30 percent increase in vasectomy procedures during the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Urologists all around the country are advertising for vasectomy madness. The procedure usually takes around 20 minutes with plenty of recovery time. “Total recovery, you’re looking at about two weeks, but you’re going to be hanging around the couch, just sitting around the house, watching TV a bunch for about three or four days,” said Cottone.
Cottone believes patients tend to pick and roll with the selective dates because it allows them to relax and hope there aren’t any bracket busters. “It’s usually a four day convalescent period after having the procedure. It just segues right into your four day weekend for March Madness.”
March Madness isn’t the only time Cottone sees an increase in vasectomies. He pointed out the Master’s Tournament is another time he sees his schedule starting to fill up. “Again, another four day weekend. I hadn’t really noticed it, but now that you bring it up absolutely, it seems we have had an uptake here in the last couple of weeks.”
Cottone has been recruited by local men with the sole purpose of having the procedure done just in time for the tournament. “I’ve had people exactly this year come in within the last few weeks and I asked them when would you like to do it and they would say March Madness is getting ready to come around. I’d like to do it during March Madness and Thursday’s a big day for vasectomies.”
