Vancleave volleyball wins 5A state championship

‘Give me five’ has a whole new meaning at Vancleave High School where the Lady Bulldogs now have a ring for every finger as MHSAA state champions for the fifth year in a row.

Never underestimate the heart of a champion with the Lady Bulldogs having to battle back from two sets down to win the last three in a 3-2 thriller over Lafayette 25-27, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 15-5.

Perhaps learning from their South State battle with East Central in which Vancleave lost the third and fourth sets before taking the fifth in dramatic fashion.

After winning four consecutive 4A crowns, this is Vancleave’s first state championship as a 5A school and the first for first-year Head Coach Heather Allen.

Senior outside player Lyndi Bakker was named the game’s most valuable player for the Bulldogs.

Vancleave was one of four Coast teams playing for a state title on Saturday, but the Bulldogs were the only champion of the bunch.

4A Pass Christian losing to Pontotoc in straight sets and 3A Our Lady Academy getting swept as well to Alcorn Central.

The most heart-breaking loss belonging to Resurrection Catholic 3-2 at the hands of Hickory Flat.
