Vancleave community recognizes band, swim, and volleyball achievements

Vancleave High School has a lot to be proud of this week after sports teams and the band all received awards and honors.

The Bulldog Pride Band scored all superior for the first time in over five years at South Alabama’s Marching Championship this weekend.

The swim team featured several state competitors including swim captain Kaley Davis who won state titles in the 100 fly and 100 back stroke.

Last, but not least, the girls volleyball team became the 2021 5A state champions, the program’s fifth consecutive state title.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by senior Lyndi Bakker, who was also named the 2021 MHSAA 5A MVP. “We wanted to go with the attitude that no matter how the game ended or no matter what happened we just worked hard each every point and was just wanted to implement that. If we’re having fun and doing what we love that it doesn’t matter what happens, as long as we’re with our best friends and that the outcome would be what it is and we won. So just implementing the good happy atmosphere.”

Vancleave Head Volleyball Coach Heather Allen said, “Without the community we could have never gotten to the point that we’ve made it to. Our student section was great. Our fans were amazing and they followed us everywhere. And my girls do a lot better with a loud gym rather than a gym that doesn’t have a lot of people.”

The pep rally was capped off with fireworks and the playing of “We are the Champions.”
