USS Jackson to be Commissioned on the Coast
This weekend, the city of Gulfport will be rolling out the red carpet for the USS Jackson commissioning ceremony.
The littoral combat ship was christened last spring. Saturday’s ceremony signifies it is officially entering the Navy fleet and it’ll be taking place right here on the Coast. The commissioning ceremony will be at the Port of Gulfport on Saturday at 10 a.m. Gulfport city officials are expecting over 2,000 people to come out for the ceremony. One of those 2,000 will be former governor of Mississippi and current secretary of the Navy, the Honorable Ray Mabus.
City of Gulfport Public Information Officer Chris Vignes said, “It’s a huge honor that the city is participating with the city of Jackson’s mayor’s office and our mayor’s office to have this happen. Again, it’s being named after the state capital and will be at the Port of Gulfport and it’s just going to be a great honor for us to host as the city of Gulfport.”
Tickets to the event are free but they must be picked up at Gulfport City Hall.
