USM’s Zach Wilcke, Jason Brownlee forming strong chemistry

Not a whole lot to write home about offensively for Southern Miss in its 27-10 week six loss at Troy.

The lone bright spot in the passing game coming in the form of freshman quarterback Zach Wilcke to senior wide receiver Jason Brownlee who connected for a career-high 12 receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown, showing the early growth of a young QB.

Southern Miss Head Coach Will Hall said, “Troy dictated that. Zach read all of his pass plays that Jason Brownlee caught correctly. He was the guy to go to, except for maybe one of them. So out of his 12 catches, 11 of them were read correctly. So Troy was bailing back, giving us a lot of underneath stuff. There was a lot of hitches and a lot of quick game slants. They were rolling to our tight end to take the run away, sliding the backers so Brownlee was one-on-one backside and Zach took it. I thought that was a great job by him.”

Next up for USM, trying to get back to .500 on homecoming as the Golden Eagles welcome Arkansas State to the Rock for a 6 p.m. kickoff on Saturday.
