USM’s Matt Wallner named Freshman of the Year
First impressions are a powerful thing whether or not they’re as powerful as Matt Wallner’s bat is debatable. Nonetheless, the Southern Miss standout has received another post-season honor after an incredible 2017 campaign.
Today ‘Baseball America’ tabbed the Conference USA Freshman of the Year as the National Freshman of the Year.
Wallner is certainly a deserving recipient, having blasted a team high of 19 home runs and 63 RBIs, both of which are new USM freshman school records.
He also did it on the mound, prior to a nagging hip injury, posting a 2-0 record with a sub 2 ERA. Right now, Wallner is playing for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and has appeared in two games so far.
