USM making an impact on the Gulf Coast

Southern Miss is making an impact on the Gulf Coast with the blue economy.

USM’s 11th president Dr. Joe Paul spoke at the Rotary Club of Gulfport on the importance of the university to the Gulf Coast.

Dr. Paul discussed the college’s contribution to the blue economy and the college’s new programs that are making them different than other educational institutions. “Our focus here is on coastal academic programs, for coastal people, for coastal jobs. And we are all in on it. You’re going to see it and hear it. We’re just really launching it. What else does the Gulf Coast need in terms of jobs? We need teachers, accountants, and social workers. And so, we’re going to lock in with that moving forward and we are confident that will lead to some great growth.”

Dr. Paul mentioned a few of the academic programs are related to the blue economy including coastal sustainability, hydrographic science, and ocean science engineering.
