USM in Conference USA Title Game
The University of Southern Mississippi is gearing up for a Conference USA Championship showdown this weekend against Western Kentucky.
The 9-3 Golden Eagles are just three years removed from a miserable 0-12 season. Since taking over, head coach Todd Monken has improved the team’s win total from one win in 2013, three wins last year and nine this year and a trip to the conference championship.
The Golden Eagles are riding a six game winning streak but will face a big test against the Hill Toppers, who are undefeated in conference play.
This past weekend, USM beat Louisiana Tech 58-24 to clinch the western division. Coach Monken said, “I mean, we are a bowl team already. The one win, like I told our team last week, that game was different because the difference between eight and nine wins, other than your record, is the game itself. No other regular season game, even though it counted as one, meant as much as the one we just played because what it did was it allowed you to win the west and play one more and play for a championship.”
The game kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m. on ESPN 2.
