USM identity unwavering after FSU loss

On Saturday, Southern Miss allowed 66 points to now third-ranked Florida State, the most the Golden Eagles have given up since the 66 they surrendered to Tulane in 2020 which just so happens to their week three opponent.

The Green Wave coming off a top 25 defeats of its own, falling to now 17th ranked Ole Miss 37-20 despite heading into the fourth quarter tied at 17.

Then extra motivation for Tulane, after blowing a 14-point lead in last year’s three-point loss to USM.

Back in Hattiesburg, the Black and Gold now 1-1 on the young season after a big win over FCS Alcorn State and a big loss at FSU.

Somewhere in between, Southern Miss finally getting a true test in the 34th Battle for the Bell. USM Head Coach Will Hall said, “We know what our identity is. We’re going to be a multiple personnel team that uses some tempo at times and mixes run and pass and takes what the defense gives you. Florida State doesn’t give you anything – they didn’t us, and it is what it is, so we’ve got a good offensive football team. We’re going to be good, and it is what it is. We’re looking forward to the rest of the year. Great to have them here at the Rock. Great for that rivalry to be renewed. I commend both administrations, and we want to win.”

Southern Miss and Tulane kick things off at 3 p.m. Saturday from MM Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg.
