USM Head Coach Will Hall returns to Tulane in week four clash

Back in June, News 25 caught up with Tulane Head Football Coach Willie Fritz at the Great Southern Club in Gulfport. It should come as no surprise that the main talking point was Southern Miss Head Coach Will Hall.

Coach Hall served as the Green Wave offensive coordinator for two seasons prior to taking the USM position in December 2020 and both parties still maintain a close friendship to this day.

Coach Fritz told News 25 his old friend has already done a great job in Hattiesburg, but at the same time, Tulane is trying to make sure it’s not a happy homecoming for the former play caller.

The Green Wave coming in with a perfect 3-0 record. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles coming off their first win of the season, 64-10 over Northwestern State.

According to Coach Hall, It’s all love. “I love Willie Fritz; you know what I’m saying? And Pete, my youngest son, Coach Fritz is like a grandfather to him. Coach Fritz saved my career when I had made the DI transition and was really down on the profession. He brought me in and getting to work for him showed me that you could win and succeed in this profession and still be a good person, which I always believed in my heart, but you don’t see that a lot in this profession anymore. And he does things the right way and I’m so happy that they’re off to a 3-0 start. Again, man, they’re trying to kick our butt and we’re trying to kick theirs this weekend.”

USM and Tulane kick things off from the Big Easy at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Green Wave won the last meeting 66-24 in 2020 when Hall was still the Tulane OC.
