USM Gulf Park Adding Smart Room to Campus

USM Gulf Park students eagerly flooded campus for orientation in preparation for classes on August 19th. Little did they know that the campus has big improvements on tap.
Jared Makamson is a 17 year Air Force veteran. For the last seven years, he worked as a medic using his knowledge to help save lives. Those skills were put to the test as he checked vitals as part of USM’s clinical challenge, a requirement for all of the school’s nursing students.
With a recent half million dollar investment to build a new state of the art smart room for this year’s nursing students, USM leaders believe this is a vital program. In less than a month, students will have two 80 inch TVs, a smart podium and other technology learning tools right at their fingertips.
Dean of USM College of Nursing Dr. Katherine Nugent said, “We are working on student retention and progression to graduation. We’re working on interactive learning. And this classroom is going to give us the capability to do all that.”
One thing the new room will offer is more technology and space where students can watch live streams of other students working on mannequins. “And then, they’ll be able to do a critique or write a new scenario. So, it brings the clinical practice into the classroom,” said Dr. Nugent.
Practice newly acquired skills that will reach beyond the classroom as students like Jared Makamson continue along their chosen career paths. “This is a great opportunity for me to get my BSN then after this I’m planning on getting back in,” said Makamson.
