USM Gulf Coast Research Lab Expands Marine Biology Program
The USM Gulf Coast Research Laboratory is expanding its after school marine biology program. The program started last year with fourth and fifth graders.
Now, seventh and eighth graders are invited to learn about ‘all things science’ on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. The maximum class size for the new group is 18.
USM prefers to keep the program small, allowing participants to receive as much hands-on learning as possible. Summer Dorcik, marine educator at the laboratory, said, “We found that kids about seventh and eighth grade really start thinking about career choices. So, we want some kids that are very interested in the ocean to maybe grow up and actually become scientists or local marine biologists.”
The program is $150 per student for one month. That price includes fees for boats, kayaks, bus transportation and more.
