USM going for first four-game winning streak since 2015
Southern Miss is just one win away from bowl eligibility and a big part of USM’s 5-3 start to the 2022 season is the super back.
The Frank Gore Jr.- led offense came to life at the end of last season and it was quick to resurface in week one after the loss of Ty Keyes due to injury.
But freshman Zach Wilcke has emerged as a very capable QB1 in recent weeks and Head Coach Will Hall used both to his advantage during USM’s 39-24 win over Louisiana on Thursday.
He says he’ll continue to do so as they go for their first four-game winning streak since 2015 against Georgia State. “I think it really alleviates a lot of stress off of him. Also, it gives us an advantage in the run game, again to keep our defense fresh, keep them off the field. And then if they want to load the box, we feel like Frank and Rambo and those guys can throw it over the top and it creates one-on-one match-ups for our receivers, which is something we haven’t done much this year is take advantage of that. We went into this game knowing, if they’re going to go one-on-one on our wideouts, we’re going to throw it, because there’s nothing better than a one-on-one match-up. You can’t get any better than that in football, so it’s something we’ll continue to utilize when we need to as we continue to develop this program.”
