USM blocking out the noise: Golden Eagles humble amidst 14 game winning streak
Southern Miss will embark on its tournament run as the number one seed in the field. Defending its crown will be priority number one, starting with game number one.
The Golden Eagles head into the tournament riding the nation’s longest active winning streak at 14 games, but they didn’t win those all at once. They took it one game at a time and the results speak for themselves.
With the regular season now in the rearview mirror, the mentality doesn’t change for the Black and Gold. The stage is just a little bigger and the expectations a little higher. Southern Miss third baseman Taylor Braley said, “We’ve just got to stay humble about it, keep a level head and just keep playing our game and not live up to all the hype about how we’re playing the best baseball or we’re the best team, so we can’t just go out there and give a game away. I mean we’ve obviously got to keep playing hard and playing with each other.”
Southern Miss Pitcher Kirk McCarty said, “It’s good when both parts are working together and I feel like they are right now. We’re playing good defense and we’re really playing together as a team so we’re really excited, man. We’ve got a good chance to do something special.”
USM and UTSA are slated for the 4 p.m. slot tomorrow which will be the third game of the day. The Eagles closed out the regular season with a three game sweep of the Roadrunners in San Antonio.
