USM alum Matt Wallner selected to play in MLB All-Star Futures Game
Minnesota Made turned into Hattiesburg Hero, Matt Wallner is doing wonders as he continues his journey towards the big leagues.
Wallner was recruited out of Minnesota to join the Southern Miss baseball team in 2017. During his time as a Golden Eagle, Wallner set the record for most home runs after only three seasons.
He’s still hitting home runs after being drafted in the first round of the 2019 draft by the Minnesota Twins.
Wallner is currently playing Double-A with the Wichita Wind Surge where he was recently selected to play in the 2022 All-Star Futures Game. “Pro ball is different than college ball. It’s definitely a grind. But ultimately, you’re still playing baseball so that’s obviously a good thing. But playing every day is a lot of work and it turns into a little bit of a job sometimes…but it’s some ups and downs and recently it’s been more ups than downs for me so that’s exciting.”
You can catch Wallner and the rest of the All-Star Futures as they play in Dodger Stadium on Saturday, July 16th at 7 p.m.
