US Coast Guard commissions newest national security cutter named for first Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard

A new Coast Guard ship built by Ingalls was commissioned over the weekend.

The United States Coast Guard Cutter Calhoun is named after the First Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast, Charles Calhoun.

Calhoun enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1946 and rose to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer on August 27th, 1969.

Construction of the ship began in 2019 and was officially delivered to the Coast Guard in October 2023.

The Calhoun was delivered to Coast Guard Base Charleston and commission on April 20th, in honor of Calhoun’s birthday.
